Men’s Tennis Falls in SLIAC Semifinals Despite Newlin, Wolf Strong Showing

Published: April 13, 2021

ST. LOUIS, Ill. For the third time in two years Greenville mens tennis has suffered a close heartbreaking defeat by rival Webster University, with Saturdays 5-3 loss ending their 2011 season. Joe Newlin and Ian Wolf won #1 and #2 singles as well as #1 doubles, but their efforts were not enough to lift the Panthers past WU.

After six team matches (three doubles and three singles) the teams were in a 3-3 deadlock heading into the final three singles matches. Webster won the first two, with the Gorlocks third participant retiring with the win in hand, dealing GC the 5-3 blow.

Greenville College mens tennis ended the 2011 season 11-7 (3-3 SLIAC) with a third place conference finish.

GC tennis will look to 2012 with optimism and excitement as they return six of the nine team members from 2011s squad. #2 singles SLIAC champion and junior Ian Wolf will be looked to for leadership, and the young freshman rackets of Austin Young and Ryan Haas will be expected to step up to contend for the SLIAC crown.

Im really proud of our guys this year, head coach Brett Brannon stated. I feel bad for our seniors that it couldnt have ended a little sweeter, but overall we had a great season and accomplished a lot both on and off the court.
