Published: April 13, 2021

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- The Greenville College athletic department has recognized two seniors as its top male and female student-athletes of the year. Winning the H.J. Long Award as GC's top senior male student-athlete was Joe Newlin of St. Louis, Mo., and being awarded the June Strahl Award as GC's top senior female student-athlete was Jessica Dothager of Brighton, Ill.

Newlin, a four-year letterwinner in men's tennis and a two-year letterwinner in men's soccer, completed the 2010-11 tennis season with a No. 1 singles record of 19-6 and a No. 1 doubles mark of 22-4. He was a member of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) first team in No. 1 doubles with teammate Ian Wolf and earned second team honors in No. 1 singles.

Dothager, a four-year letterwinner in volleyball, was the first volleyball player in school history to earn the honor of SLIAC volleyball player of the year, collecting the player of the year award and first team all-conference accolades in 2009 and 2010. She led the 2010 volleyball team to a record of 26-6 and the school's first appearance in the NCAA Division III national tournament. She was second team all-conference in 2008.

Both awards are named in honor of those who have been important in the establishment of athletics at Greenville College. The H.J. Long Award was developed in 1963 to honor the efforts of former President H.J. Long who was instrumental in the start of intercollegiate athletics on campus. The June Strahl Award was first given in 1975 and is named in honor of June Strahl who effectively spearheaded the introduction of intercollegiate athletics for women on the Greenville campus.
