Panther Softball Splits in Battle at Blackburn

Published: April 13, 2021

CARLINVILLE, Ill.-- The Greenville College Softball team traveled to Blackburn to take on the Beavers in a double-header. The team won the first game 3-2 but could not pull off the sweep and fell in game two 4-3.

In the first game, Greenville got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the third when Mattie Fairchild singled to bring Bryn McKie home. Blackburn scored in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 1-1 where it remained until the 8th. Blackburn scored in the top of the inning and thought they had the game in the bag until Fairchild doubled sending Shannon Elbe across home plate for the Panther run before the Beavers ended the inning. This meant the game was tied again and the teams headed into a 9th inning. GC was able to keep the Beavers from scoring in the top of the inning and headed into the bottom of the 9th hoping for a chance to close the game. Fortunately, that chance came when Fairchild singled once again to send McKie home for the winning run.

GC out-hit Blackburn 12-6 in the game. Fairchild went 4 for 5, earned 3 RBI, and hit two doubles to lead GC's offense. Ashley Woodrome pitched the entire game for GC. She faced 32 batters and allowed just 5 hits and 2 runs.

The second game was another close battle between the two SLIAC teams. GC once again earned the first runs of the game when Fairchild once again sent McKie home. Fairchild's hit was quickly followed by a single from Andrea Martin that allowed Shannon Elbe to score for GC. Blackburn answered in the fourth inning with two runs of their own to tie the game 2-2. In the top of the 5th, Fairchild crossed the base for GC, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Panthers. Greenville's thought they were going to earn the sweep until the last inning of the game when the Beavers scored two runs and ended the game 4-3, Blackburn.

Fairchild, Martin, and Helms earned RBI for GC. Hannah Burger was credited with the loss from the mound. She faced 2 batters and gave up 7 hits and 4 runs.

These games bring the Lady Panther's record to 3-19 (8-8 SLIAC).
