Panthers on the Prowl: Men’s Soccer Accomplishing GOALS!

Published: April 13, 2021

The Greenville College athletic department strives to develop discipline in the lives of its participants through athletic involvement, and the dedication that is required. Members of the 2009 men's soccer team demonstrate this dedication day in and day out.

Built upon a growing foundation of success, the Panther soccer program continued to excel this past fall season. The men's team finished the year SLIAC Regular Season Champions, as they tied the school record for the most wins in a single season (16). Mirroring this triumph, they completed the season with seven players on the Academic All-Conference Team.

Head Coach Brian McMahon looks to foster this academic success, enforcing mandatory study sessions on a weekly basis throughout the year. McMahon believes this consistency provides the necessary foundation for his team's success in the classroom. Senior Matt Reeb provides a shining testament to this idea, as well as the dedication McMahon hopes to instill in his players on the field. Being named this year a 1st Team All-American, and recognized as the #1 NCCAA Forward in the Nation, Reeb currently holds a 3.7 cumulative GPA. As a two year captain, Reeb guided his team to academic and athletic success.

Transferring to Greenville after his sophomore year, Reeb found a home in the supportive, encouraging environment of GC athletics. Reeb's dedication on the field was second to none. In the three years that he attended GC, he was never less than an hour early to practice.

When asked for the key to his success, Reeb advocated the importance of learning how to manage his time. "I learned quickly that I cannot procrastinate on things as a student athlete," says Reeb. "What normally would be free time had to be dedicated to studying. Homework was always first, so the choice was either free time or soccer, and because soccer was very important to me I would much rather spend time doing that."

Being able to combine learning along with athletics is the goal of each athlete at Greenville College. Panther soccer meets this challenge head on, and clearly walks away triumphant.
