"Precious Bane" Opens at Factory Theatre

Published: April 13, 2021

Precious Bane,a drama with music based on the 1924 novel by Mary Webb, will open Wednesday, April 9 at the Factory Theatre, with additional performances through Saturday, April 12. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m.

Precious Bane, a play based on the novel by Mary Webb, is the story of a young woman, Prue Sarn, in rural England during the early 19th century who was born with a cleft lip and is subject to the cruel words and superstitions of the people in her community. Despite these setbacks, Prue becomes one of the few literate members of her community.

Prue meets the weaver, a kind and gentle man, and falls in love. Ashamed of her face, she hides from him but watches him carefully, recording her love for him in a book she keeps hidden in her attic.

Unfortunately, when tragedy strikes and Gideon is found dead, the community turns the blame on Prue and a mob forms seeking justice. Will the weaver be able to see through Prues physical appearance and recognize her true beauty?

Directed by Rachel Foulks, Precious Bane will run for four performances at the Greenville College Factory Theatre in the Kelsey Building on Harris Avenue in Greenville, Ill.

Precious Bane portrays a journey toward love and acceptance, in spite of hardship and tragedy. Beautifully underscored by a solo cellist, this is a story of pain and redemption that will pull you into a world you will not soon forget. Join us as we tell this story, April 9-12 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 and are available at Jo's Java and Watson's Drug Store.
