Rededication Planned for College Tennis Courts

Homecoming 2015 at Greenville College will include the rededication of its newly refurbished tennis courts. A brief ceremony will take place at 12:30 p.m., Friday, October 16, at the Scott J. Burgess Tennis Complex. Planned festivities include the installation of a plaque commemorating the 40th anniversary of the courts. The public is invited to attend.

President Ivan Filby will welcome special guests Jay and Shay Burgess, parents of Scott Burgess, in whose memory the courts were named. Milwaukee Bucks General Manager John Hammond 76 and his wife Marsha will also attend. Hammond was Scott Burgess roommate at Greenville College and remains close to the Burgesses.

In 1972, Hammond and Burgess played junior varsity basketball as college freshmen. In a routine drill shortly before Thanksgiving that year, Burgess collided with another player. He sustained brain injuries and died three days later. The tennis courts named in his honor were completed in 1975. Additional courts were added in 1994.
