Softball drops doubleheader to St. Thomas and Loras

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The softball team came up short 16-4 to St. Thomas before losing a heartbreaking 13-12 game to Loras on Thursday.

While the Panthers hung tough on Thursday, but St. Thomas pulled away late for the 16-4 victory.

Brianna Anderson was charged with the loss. She allowed nine runs in 4 2/3 innings, walked four and struck out two.

University of St. Thomas Tommies never surrendered the lead after getting four runs in the first inning and two each in the third and fourth innings.

The Panthers scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut their deficit to four. An RBI single by Cassandra Lueking, an error, a sacrifice fly by Bryn McKie, and an error sparked the Panthers' rally.

St. Thomas put the game out of reach with eight runs in the top of the seventh.

Loras Recap

The Panthers failed to take advantage of Tiffany Samsoe's effort at the plate on Thursday, losing 13-12 to Loras.

Samsoe hit two home runs for the Panthers. Samsoe went 2-for-3 in the game with two RBIs and two runs scored. Samsoe homered in the third and fifth innings.

The Panthers converted a triple play in the third inning.

Catie Opp ended up on the wrong side of the pitching decision, charged with the loss. She lasted just 4 1/3 innings, walked two, struck out one, and allowed five runs.

The top of the second saw the Panthers take an early lead, 3-0. Andrea Martin kicked things off for the Panthers with a single. An error then moved Martin from first to second. The Panthers then tacked on more runs when Lueking and Woody scored on a two-run single by Bryn McKie.

Loras scored two runs of its own in the third and three in the fourth to gain a 5-4 advantage.

Greenville answered with two in the top of the fifth to regain the lead, but Loras posted a five run bottom of the fifth.

Greenville got six runs in the top of the seventh to take a 12-10 lead, but Loras racked up three runs to win the game.
