Softball reaches championship game

ELSAH, Ill. -- The softball team advanced to its second consecutive SLIAC championship game as it split two games on Saturday. Greenville lost the first game 7-6 to Fontbonne before coming back in the nightcap for a 5-2 win against Spalding.

Greenville fell behind 2-0 in the second inning of game one before taking a 3-2 lead with three runs in the top of the third. Fontbonne regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third, but Greenville answered with two runs in the top of the fourth and one in the top of the fifth for a 6-4 lead.

Fontbonne scored single runs in the final three innings to take the win.

Tiffany Samsoe, Becca Oldham, and Shelby Cash each posted two hits for Greenville. Andrea Martin drove in two runs. Danielle Helms scored two runs.

Hannah Burger started the game for Greenville and went five innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits. Jessica Laubecher was the losing pitcher as she gave up one run in 1.2 innings.

Greenville took a 2-0 lead in the first inning in game two and never trailed as they took a 5-2 win that eliminated Spalding. Greenville added a run in the third for a 3-0 lead and Spalding got a run in the top of the fifth. Greenville added two runs in the bottom of the fifth for insurance. Spalding scored their final run in the seventh.

Tiffany Samsoe hit two home runs and drove in four runs for Greenville. Bryn McKie was 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

Burger was the winning pitcher as she threw six innings and allowed two runs on five hits.

The Lady Panthers (24-16) face Fontbonne on Saturday in the championship game.
