Women’s Basketball Falls at Fontbonne 73-65

Published: April 13, 2021

ST. LOUIS, Mo. Despite shooting 58 percent and racing out to a 10 point first half lead, the Greenville women surrendered another tough SLIAC contest on Wednesday night as they fell 73-65 to Fontbonne University in St. Louis.

Juniors Ieisha Adams and Katelyn Wise led the women in the heartbreaker, each posting 14 points and five boards. Adams also added five assits and two steals to stuff the stat sheet in Wednesdays conference duel.

Heading into the second period GC held a 38-28 lead, but the host Griffins used a 26-4 run over the next 10 minutes to take a 52-42 lead with 9:25 to go in the game. After a poor shooting first half, Fontbonne shot 47 percent in the second half including 3-6 from behind the arc. The Griffins sealed the game at the free throw line making 16 of their 23 second half attempts.

Foul trouble cost us in a big way Wednesday night, commented head coach Roy Mulholland. We had key players play cut minutes, and in a conference dogfight that can really hurt. We also struggled again to put a full game together, and second half play continues to be our undoing.

Greenville cut the second half deficit to within three with four minutes to play, but an overall 26-4 run by FU proved to overwhelming to overcome.

With the loss Greenville College womens basketball drops to 6-13 (3-8 SLIAC) and will look to bounce back at home as they welcome Westminster on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
