Women’s Soccer Dominates Conference Opener, Blanks Highlanders 9-0

GREENVILLE, Ill. GC showcased a brilliant team effort in Saturdays SLIAC opener, controlling MacMurray in all phases of the weekend match.

Greenville used a 21-0 shot advantage to hang nine goals on the visiting Highlanders. Five different women scored for the squad with all goals coming on assists.

Sophomore Natalie Henneberry led the Panthers in the win, posting two goals on four shots with an assist. Fellow sophomore Maureen Murphy also turned in a key performance, netting two goals of her own on two shots and providing an assist.

Defensively senior keeper Emily Rose earned the win in the shutout.

In first period play Greenville jumped out to an early lead behind a Jackie Sievert strike. Sievert connected on a ball placed by Henneberry to take the 1-0 lead at the 0:53 mark. Henneberry extended the GC margin at 1:40 and 4:31 with back-to-back goals on assists from Murphy and Kayla Panzau. Murphy joined the scoring push in the 6th minute on an assist from Sievert before Panzau netted a chance of her own in the 13th minute. In total Greenville posted six goals in the first 13 minutes of play and held a 6-0 lead heading into intermission.

In the opening minutes of the second half senior Rachel Zahniser buried a ball placed by teammate Kelsey Heaps. Two minutes later at 47:53 redshirt freshman Haley Thatcher netted her chance on an assist from Jen Williams. Junior back Jeana Brandmeyer would close the scoring in the 59th minute when she struck a ball placed by Heaps to give Greenville a 9-0 margin and the inevitable win.

With the win GC womens soccer improves to 4-4 (1-0 SLIAC) and will play Rose-Hulman on Tuesday in Terre Haute, Indiana.
