Honors Seminars

In addition to traditional honors courses, McAllaster Scholars may take as many as six one-credit "honors seminars." At least two honors seminars are offered each semester. Honors seminars feature:

  • small class sizes
  • experiential learning
  • a professor teaching out of his or her "wheelhouse"
During the 2012-2013 academic year, the following Honors Seminars are being offered:

  • Arts of St. Louis- Emeritus Theatre Professor Cecilia Ulmer will introduce students to a wide range of cultural performances in the St. Louis area. Since learning rarely occurs simply via "experience," this course assumes that learning requires "reflection." Thus, a significant part of the course work requires students to "think" about the art they are observing both before and after the performance.
  • Cinematic Conversations- Art Professor and Video Artist Jake Amundson draws McAllaster Scholars into the interface between the McAllaster Scholars community and the broader intellectual community of GC. He does this by directing McAllaster Scholars to host a film series throughout the semester focusing on the theme that has been selected for the senior capstone experience. This year, the theme is "Abundance and Need." Using film as a catalyst for conversation with a variety of experts, CC@GC seeks to bring relevant entertainment to a wider learning community.
  • Prison Readings- Adjunct Philosophy Professor John Brittingham will travel with McAllaster Scholars to the Greenville Federal Correctional Institution that sits on the outskirts of Greenville. In a medium-security prison setting, McAllaster Scholars will have the opportunity to sit alongside incarcerated women and discuss classic texts that have been written from prison. Texts include the letters of Saint Paul, The Autobiography of Malcom X, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer's Letters and Papers from Prison.
