McAllaster Lecture Series

Greenville College Welcomes Dr. Stanley Hauerwas to Campus

Many esteemed speakers have visited Greenville College through the years, and Dr. Stanley Hauerwas will rank among the most notable when he comes to campus on Nov. 26. He is a theologian who has explored philosophy, ethics and other disciplines in his effort to truthfully articulate the nature of the Christian life and the importance of the church.

Events

Hauerwas will have the honor of presenting Greenville College's first McAllaster Lecture. The lecture series is an annual event sponsored by the school's McAllaster Scholars Program.

Biography

Professor Hauerwas has sought to recover the significance of the virtues for understanding the nature of the Christian life. This search has led him to emphasize the importance of the church, as well as narrative for understanding Christian existence. His work cuts across disciplinary lines as he is in conversation with systematic theology, philosophical theology and ethics, political theory, as well as the philosophy of social science and medical ethics. He was named "America's Best Theologian" by Time magazine in 2001. Dr. Hauerwas, who holds a joint appointment in Duke Law School, delivered the prestigious Gifford Lectureship at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland in 2001.

Greenville College is a four-year accredited Christian liberal arts school with more than 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students. Founded in 1892 and affiliated with the Free Methodist Church, the college is located in Greenville, Illinois, 45 miles east of St. Louis.
