Honors Program - Research Opportunities

0

McAllaster Scholars in the sciences have the opportunity to do paid summer research as part of the Greenville College Summer Research Experience (GC-SRE). GC-SRE was initiated in the summer of 2010 and has just completed its fourth year. Over this period, 30 students have worked with seven different GC faculty on biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics projects.

Three of the groups have submitted manuscripts to peer reviewed journals. One of those articles has been published, a second has been accepted for publication, and we are waiting for word on the third. Three of our students have received awards for best research presentation in the Chemistry Division at the 2011 and 2012 Illinois State Academy of Sciences (ISAS) meetings.

Program Description:

  • Students apply for one of the 6-8 week summer research appointments in Math, Biology, Chemistry or Physics. There will be a number of projects running concurrently each with a faculty advisor and one or two students.
  • Student research stipends are $2400 (for 6 week programs) and $3200 (for 8 week programs).
  • Campus housing is provided.
  • It is the goal of each project to produce work that will be publishable in peer reviewed scientific journals. This means that students will be expected to participate in lab work, literature searching and writing.
Recent GC-SRE Projects include:
  • "Use of Wavelets in Computational Quantum Mechanics"
  • "Ecological Study of Wolf Spiders"
  • "Target Molecule Synthesis"
  • "Introduction of Spectroscopy Across the Chemistry Curriculum"
  • "Numerical Analysis of a Mathematically Stiff System through the Classic Free Radical Addition Polymerization Model"
  • "Sources of Gamma Radiation in the Environment"
  • Mathematics Education and 3-Dimensional Printing
  • Astrophotography
