Choir Auditions

GREENVILLE COLLEGE CHORAL AUDITION INFORMATION

Greenville College Chorale, Choir, Chamber Singers and Choral Union

Students desiring to participate in the Greenville College Chorale, Choir or Chamber Singers must do a choral audition. Upon auditioning each student will be placed in an appropriate ensemble. There are limited openings for G.C. Choir (the touring choir) and Chamber Singers. Auditionees who are placed in G.C. Chorale this year are strongly urged to sing in Chorale and to reaudition for G.C. Choir next year. Members of G.C. Chorale will also be put on a waiting list for the G.C. Choir should an opening occur this year.

Due to the nature of the GC Choir and the GC Chamber Singers, a one-year commitment, (Fall and Spring Semesters, including Commencement Weekend) is expected upon accepting membership.

No audition is required to sing in the Choral Union. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday Evenings beginning on September 18.

AUDITION ROUND I – New Students (Freshmen & Transfers) and Returning Students - Auditions Held in Dr. Wilson’s Studio (Whitlock Music Center, Rm. 203)

NEW STUDENTS (Freshmen and Transfer Students)

THURSDAY, AUGUST 23 from 1:00 - 6:00 pm (Sign-up in advance via Admissions Offc.);

FRIDAY, AUGUST 24 from 10:00 am – 1:15 pm (Freshmen/Transfers); SATURDAY, AUGUST 25 from 3:00 - 9:00 pm (Freshmen/Transfers); SUNDAY, AUGUST 26 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm (Freshmen/Transfers as needed); MONDAY, AUGUST 27 from 9:00 am - Noon (Transfers and Returnees) TUESDAY, AUGUST 28 from 10:30 am – 5:00 pm (as needed);

OTHER TIMES AS ARRANGED WITH DR. WILSON (618-664-6561) B) Complete the Greenville Choir Application and bring it to your audition.

Please warm-up prior to your audition.

C) RoundIAuditionsconsistof:

1) V ocalizing throughout your range; 2) Tonal Memory; 3) Sight-Singing; 4) Singing your voice part on “My Country ‘Tis Of Thee” with piano

accompaniment. (Printed music will be provided at the audition).

D) CALL-BACKSforROUNDIIwillbepostedatDr.Wilson’sStudio(Rm.203, Whitlock Music Center) on Tuesday Evening (8/28) or Wednesday Morning (8/29). Please read the call-back lists carefully since some people will be asked to be present at two call-back auditions.

E) New students interested in auditioning for Chamber Singers should indicate their interest on the choral application form. Call-backs for Chamber Singers are on Friday, August 31.AUDITION ROUND II – Call-backs for those being considered for G.C. Choir – (New Students who are on the Call-Back List and Returning G.C. Choir Members)

A) Audition Times: Wednesday, August 29 & Thursday, August 30 in the WHITLOCK MUSIC CENTER RECITAL HALL

Soprano – Wednesday, August 29 from 3:30-4:15 pm Alto – Wednesday, August 29 from 4:15-5:00 pm Tenor – Thursday, August 30 from 3:30-4:15 pm Bass – Thursday, August 30 from 4:15-5:00 pm

B) Round II Auditions consist of:

1) Learning a portion of a choral selection with a group (music to be provided at audition);

2) Singing the selection individually; 3) Singing the selection with other vocalists.

C) ThefinalrostersforbothG.C.ChoirandG.C.Choralewillbepostedoneither Thursday Evening (8/30) or Friday Morning (8/31). Students should then make sure that they are enrolled in the appropriate class (G.C. Choir – MUEN 141/341; G.C. Chorale – MUEN 142/342).

D) CALL-BACKSforCHAMBERSINGERSwillbepostedatthesametimeas rosters for G.C. Chorale and G.C. Choir. A person must be a member of G.C. Choir in order to be in Chamber Singers.

AUDITION ROUND III – Call-Backs for Chamber Singers

A) Audition Time: Friday, August 31 from 3:30-5:00 pm in the WHITLOCK MUSIC CENTER RECITAL HALL

B) All students will audition together beginning at 3:30 pm.

C) ChamberSingerAuditionswillconsistof:

1) Learning and singing several choral selections with a small group (music to be provided at audition).

D) ThefinalrosterforG.C.ChamberSingerswilllikelybepostedatRm.203, Whitlock Music Center by Monday, September 3. Students who are selected for Chamber Singers should then make sure that they are enrolled in MUEN 163/363.

Auditionees who are not invited to join the G.C. Chamber Singers this year will be put on a waiting list in case an opening should occur and are strongly urged to reaudition again next year.

GREENVILLE COLLEGE CHORAL ENSEMBLES – 2012-13

MUEN 141/341 Greenville College Choir (A Cappella Choir) One Credit The Greenville College Choir, founded by Professor Robert W. Woods in 1927, has become an outstanding symbol of the College. It offers students throughout the College an opportunity to sing exemplary sacred choral literature in an excellent, mixed choir setting. Concerts are given throughout the year, including an extended annual tour. GC Choir also performs with the Greenville Choral Union. Membership in the College Choir is by audition and includes the expectation of a year long commitment. (Offered every semester) – Four Rehearsals per week

MUEN 142/342 Chorale One Credit Chorale is a mixed choir which focuses on music reading and vocal technique. As part of the Greenville Choral Union, Chorale performs large-scale choral orchestral works such as Handel’s “Messiah”. Membership is open to all students and an assessment audition is required. (Offered every semester) – Three Rehearsals per week

MUEN 163/363 Chamber Singers One-Half Credit Chamber Singers is a select vocal ensemble which performs sacred and secular literature from the 16th century to the present day. Concurrent enrollment in the Greenville College Choir is required. Students are expected to remain in the ensemble for the full year. Membership is by invitation. (Offered every semester.) – Two Rehearsals per week

Greenville Choral Union No Credit Choral Union is a large mixed choir which prepares and performs choral-orchestral masterworks such as Handel’s MESSIAH and Mozart’s REQUIEM. Membership is open to students, staff, faculty and community members. No audition is required. (Offered each fall semester and occasional spring semesters.) – One Rehearsal per week
