Greenville School of Education

Greenville University holds a long tradition of preparing educators to teach God’s children in our culturally diverse world.  Here in the School of Education, we are serious about preparing future teachers to create classroom environments that promote cooperation and responsibility, support self-worth, affirm the dignity of all students, and stimulate learning.  We focus our programs around robust, practical classroom experiences. These experiences begin during freshman year and are paired intentionally with coursework until the student’s senior year. 

Preparing teachers to address character-education and the social and emotional learning needs of their students in their future classrooms is a significant marker in our program. This preparation is accomplished with our faith and learning integration, which is embedded into our program. Graduates from the School of Education receive a Character Education certification from a nationally recognized organization.

  • Over the past five years, 100% of our students passed the edTPA, a high stakes licensure exam.
  • Students who graduate with a teaching license will also graduate with a certification in Character Education from CharacterPlus.
  • With an accelerated entry into classrooms, students begin their observation and teaching experiences in their first year of college.
  • Recent education graduates report that 90% are working within an education related environment.  
  • The School of Education has traditional undergraduate, degree completion, and graduate programs.

Experiences gained at the School of Education. 

Here at the School of Education, we believe that a quality Teacher Preparation Program has sound theory that is equally matched with practical real-world experience.  With partnerships around our region, we will place you in dynamic schools and classrooms that will give you over 300 hours of real classroom field experience before you student teach your Senior Year.

  • Freshman Year: During your Introduction to Education course, you will be in St. Louis observing urban classrooms as well as inside a local special education classroom as you take Exceptional Child and learn about students with disabilities.
  • Sophomore Year: Our Diversity in Education course will take you to observe in East St. Louis, and we will push to explore creativity as you enter Art and Music classrooms around Greenville.  You will continue to assist in classrooms in your content area and begin gaining more responsibility in the classroom.  
  • Junior Year: Methods classes this year are paired with field experiences that are specifically designed for you to experience real classrooms with real children with whom you can teach the lessons that you designed.  Character Education and creating a learning environment that promotes positive behavior are targeted this year so that you are ready for student teaching the next year.
  • Senior Year: Early Experience lets you develop the classroom you will student teach in before the students arrive with your cooperating teacher, the set-up is critical, and we don’t want you to miss it.  You will spend your fall semester in clinicals preparing for your edTPA and student teaching. Then the spring semester, you will student teach in one of our partnership schools.  We have many in the local area, St. Louis, Chicago, or the Dominican Republic.
