What is a Certified Athletic Trainer?

Certified athletic trainers are health care professionals who specialize in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. As part of a complete health care team, the certified athletic trainer works under the direction of a licensed physician and in cooperation with other health care professionals, athletics administrators, coaches and parents.

Mike has been the head athletic trainer at GC since August 2000.  He earned a bachelor's degree in Physical Education with an option in athletic training in 1999 and a Master's degree in Physical Education with cardiac rehabilitation/adult fitness in 2000 from Eastern Illinois University.  His duties include prevention, medical care, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, oversee the athletic training budget, policies and procedures, scheduling, and staffing of two athletic trainers and student workers.

Whitney has been at GC since July 2011.  She comes to GC after completing her Master's degree from Western Illinois University in 2011 and her undergraduate degree from Culver-Stockton University in 2009. Her duties include prevention, medical care, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, summer camp coverage and day to day operation of the HJ Long Athletic Training Room.

Dr. John Yetter is the Sports Medicine Director at Greenville Regional Hospital, which supplies four certified athletic trainers to the community including the two at Greenville College, one at Greenville High School and one at Vandalia High School.  He has been in this position since July 2009 and began working with Greenville College as the team physician in August 2010.  He has an extensive background in sports medicine and has been working in the St. Louis area as a sports medicine physician for 30 years.  He is board certified in sports medicine and family practice. He has been a Fellow with the American College of Sports Medicine since 1985.  He is currently on the Sports Medicine Board for the Missouri High School Athletic Association and the Missouri Licensing Board for Athletic Trainers.  He has been the Sports Medicine Director for many NCAA championships held in the St. Louis area including men's/women's basketball Final Four, wrestling, ice hockey, and the Big 12 Football Championship.
