ST. LOUIS, Mo.--The Panthers headed into the SLIAC Semi-Final match off a 6-0 sweep of Fontbonne and hoped to earn their spot in the Finals match. Unfortunately, the Conference powerhouse, Webster would not relent and GC fell 5-1.
The GC Men faced a tall task heading into the SLIAC Semis. They were facing the 20-2 Webster University Gorlocks. Webster swept the SLIAC Conference during the regular season, gaining the #1 seed in the Conference tournament.
GC started very strong in doubles. Alex Dowley and Jordan Tingle gained an early lead, and held on late for an 8-6 victory at #2 doubles. Jon Urshan and Drew Herlein started strong, but fell in a close one at #1 doubles 8-5. Webster closed out doubles play with an 8-4 win at #3.
Webster’s singles experience proved to be too much for the Panthers. Five of Webster’s 6 starters are seniors. Webster gained the first win at #1 singles with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Next came a win at #2 singles 6-1, 6-0. Drew Herlein fought to keep the Panthers in it at #3 singles with some very strong play. He won the first set 7-5, but was overtaken by his senior opponent by scores of 6-1 in the 2nd and 3rd sets. This was the 5th point for Webster, and the team match ended. Webster 5, GC 1.
Sophomore Drew Herlein stated “We knew that we had to come out strong in doubles, and we did that. We had a couple of very crucial points that we lost that could’ve really turned the match. We are really looking forward to getting back to this point next year, and taking the next step. Our core is still intact for the next 2 years. We really feel good about the direction we are heading!"
The Panthers will face Principia in the 3rd Place match on Saturday, April 27.
