“Trying to afford school on your own is hard . . . I’ve received so much help from donors. I am blessed.”

Persons helped: Students enrolled in select classes, those minoring in Jewish Christian Studies, and the greater university community

Purpose: The professor occupying the endowed chair heads programing that helps our university community know more about our Jewish heritage as Christians.

Background: Throughout the 1970s, students from Professor James A. Reinhard’s Bible and Culture class visited houses of worship in Chicago. These included a synagogue in which Morris Shapiro worshiped. Impressed by the students’ behavior and knowledge, Shapiro  began supporting the annual class trip through the Charles and M.R. Shapiro Foundation. In 1997, the foundation funded the creation of GU’s Jewish Christian Studies program.
