GREENVILLE, Ill. — The Greenville College athletic department has announced the hiring of Phil Davis as its head men’s volleyball coach.

Davis is no stranger to Greenville College or the volleyball program. As one of the founders of the men’s club program while a Greenville College student, Davis played for the team from 1996-99. He was a dominant middle blocker in the MCVA as the team won a conference championship in 1999.

Davis coached at Tuscola High School for four years and was the founder of Blaze Volleyball Club.

Most recently, Davis was an assistant coach for the inaugural mens volleyball seson where he helped the team to a 16-11 record and a seventh place finish in the 14 team MCVL conference. His primary responsibility was training the middle blockers. He has been employed by Greenville First Christian Church as connections pastor.

“We are pleased that Phil has accepted this position, and he is an excellent hire,” said Tom Ackerman, associate athletic director and director of volleyball operations. “He understands who we are, and he will represent us well in all aspects. He has a passion for the game that will take this program to where it needs to be, and we are very excited to have him join us in a full time capacity.”

Ivan Estevez will remain on the staff as the associate head coach. Estevez completed his fourth season with the women's program and first year with the men’s team. His track record shows his value to the team as the Panthers have won the conference championship every year Ivan has been associated with the team. He trains the setters, and that has been one of Greenville's greatest strengths in recent years.

"It is a great honor to be named as head coach of the men’s volleyball team at Greenville College,” said Davis. "I would like to thank Associate Athletic Director Tom Ackerman, Dean of Athletics Doug Faulkner, Provost Edwin Estevez, and President Ivan Filby for this opportunity.”

"To be part of the Greenville College coaching staff and having the opportunity to be part of GC's faith based transforming environment is a great honor and blessing. I am excited to build upon the momentum that was created last season.”

"I look forward to coaching with Associate Head Coach Ivan Estevez. Coach Estevez is a great asset to the program, and he and I will be a formidable coaching staff. We are expecting great things from our returning core and incoming recruits as we build upon the legacy of Greenville College men’s volleyball.”

Phil and his wife Suzanne live in Greenville where Suzanne is the dean of the Briner School of Business and chief legal officer at the college. They have two daughters, Brittany and Tiffany, who are attending Greenville College.
