Cathy Burgos 95 was one of 13 recipients presented last month with the prestigious In the Company of Women award in Miami. The award was presented by the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department; the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade; and the Miami-Dade County Commission for Women.

Burgos won in the category of Health and Human Services for her 20-year career as a social worker helping at-risk youth and their families. She is director of operations for Miami-Dades Juvenile Services Department Division.

Over her career, Burgos shaped several impactful programs for at-risk youth, including the Miami-Dade Civil Citation Program, Post Arrest Diversion program, Prevention Initiative, Domestic Violence Initiative, Chaplaincy Program and Youth Job Development Program.

Measures of Success

Miami-Dade Parks states, Through these programs, Burgos has been instrumental in helping the Juvenile Services Department to reduce juvenile arrests in Miami-Dade by 80 percent over a period of 18 years, saving the community $30 million annually and giving youth the priceless gift of a fresh start and a new life.
