Alumna Cathy Burgos Wins Prestigious Award for Helping At-Risk Youth

Cathy Burgos ’95 was one of 13 recipients presented last month with the prestigious In the Company of Women award in Miami. The award was presented by the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department; the Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade; and the Miami-Dade County Commission for Women.

Burgos won in the category of Health and Human Services for her 20-year career as a social worker helping at-risk youth and their families. She is director of operations for Miami-Dade’s Juvenile Services Department Division.

Over her career, Burgos shaped several impactful programs for at-risk youth, including the Miami-Dade Civil Citation Program, Post Arrest Diversion program, Prevention Initiative, Domestic Violence Initiative, Chaplaincy Program and Youth Job Development Program.

Measures of Success

Miami-Dade Parks states, “Through these programs, Burgos has been instrumental in helping the Juvenile Services Department to reduce juvenile arrests in Miami-Dade by 80 percent over a period of 18 years, saving the community $30 million annually and giving youth the priceless gift of a fresh start and a new life.”

“Ms. Burgos embodies what the In the Company of Women award stands for: a passionate advocate for the community, and a committed servant whose heart for leading and helping others is at the core of what they do,” Miami-Dade Parks Director Maria I. Nardi shared. “Her exemplary professional career in the juvenile justice system, and her selfless volunteer efforts are making a difference not only in the lives of those she serves, but to all of us who live in Miami-Dade.”
