SAUGET, Ill. -- The baseball team was topped by Central in both games of a doubleheader on Monday. The Panthers dropped the first game 2-1 and gave up eight runs in the top of the eighth as they fell 10-3 in game 2.

The Panther season got off to a positive start as they scored in the first inning after Mike Hardin tripled to center and scored on a wild pitch. Unfortunately the Panther bats couldn't come to life.

Central posted two runs in the top of the third and held on to defeat Greenville.

Trevor Montgomery added two hits for Greenville.

C.J. Opp was the Panther starting pitcher, going four innings and giving up both runs on six hits.

Three relievers combined to toss the final five innings. Nathan Garbe threw the fifth and sixth innings, allowing two hits. Jason Collingwood gave up two hits in his inning of work, and Nick Bifano and Robbie Campbell threw one perfect inning each.

In game two, Ryan Strohm and Central's Andy Carr were deadlocked in a shutout through five innings. Central broke through with two runs in the top of the sixth, and Greenville got one back in the bottom of the seventh.

In Greenville's half of the seventh inning, Montgomery singled and advanced to third on a fielder's choice when Central's shortstop threw the ball into right field as he attempted to get the force out at second on Jared Storment's grounder. Shane Olmsted grounded into a fielder's choice to the shortstop to allow Montgomery to score.

In the top of the eighth, relievers Collingwood and Bifano combined to give up eight runs on seven hits as Central put the game out of reach.

Greenville rallied in the bottom of the ninth, posting two runs. Montgomery doubled to left and Ryan Smith was hit by a pitch. Montgomery scored on Caleb Miles RBI single through the left side, and Smith crossed home on a double play groundout by Travis Ralls.

Strohm went seven innings in his debut, allowing two runs on nine hits and striking out five. Collingwood gave up four runs without getting an out, and Bifano allowed four runs on four hits as he relieved Collingwood. Phillip Reedy threw a scoreless ninth.

The Panthers (0-2) return to action Wednesday at Rose Hulman at 7 p.m. CT (8 p.m. ET).
