Baseball Outlasts Fontbonne 12-9 in First Round Slugfest

HIGHLAND, Ill. -- Greenville College baseball advancedin thewinner's bracketof the 2012 SLIAC baseball tournament on Thursday night with a 12-9 victory over second seeded Fontbonne University at Glik Park in Highland, Ill. The Panthers will face Webster on Friday.

Sophomore pitcher Tyler Mitchell provided Greenville with the lift it needed as he relieved starting pitcher Tyler Pilcher and tossed 5 1/3 innings before yielding the mound to Scott Voyles in the ninth inning. Mitchell only allowed two runs on four hits, three walks, and two hit batsmen. He struck out four in picking up his first win. Voyles collected his fifth save.

The bats were in order for the Black & Orange as they compiled 12 runs to force the opening round upset and foil the Griffins plans of an all-St. Louis matchup in the tournament's next round.

Junior Cole Lawson went 3-for-6 with two runs scored and an RBI, while senior David Massengill was 3-for-5 with one run scored and two RBI.

Greenville jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning as David Massengill hit a sacrifice fly to score Lawson, and Ryan Smith singled to plate Massengill.

Fontbonne answered with three runs of their own before the Panthers hit in their half of the second inning. In the top of the second, Dylan Goldsmith posted an RBI single, and David Massengill came through with an RBI double.

After Fontbonne pushed their lead back to 7-4 in the bottom of the second, Greenville tied up the game in the top of the third on on an Adam Wallace RBI single, a wild pitch that scored WyattMatteson, and aGoldsmith RBI double.

Greenville took the lead in the top of the fourth whenWallace hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Jared Massengill.

Greenville tacked on the deciding runs in the top of the seventh when they posted four tallies. Lawson hit an RBI double, Goldsmith scored on an error by the shortstop, Kenny Trager came up with an RBI single, and Matteson reached on a fielder's choice that scored a run.

Greenville, the showcase'sthird seed, will now facefavorite Webster University tomorrow at 5p.m. at Highlands Glik Park. The loser of the 5 p.m. matchup will face Fontbonne in an 8p.m. capper that will decide the double-elimination championship to be played on Saturday.
