Baseball Sends Out Seniors with Home Sweep of Principia

GREENVILLE, Ill. The baseball team closed their regular season with a doubleheader at home against Principia on Saturday, May 3. The Panthers came back to win the first game 7-6, and blew out Principia in the second game 14-4. Between games, the Panthers recognized seniors Campbell Albert, Hunter Bryan, Mitchell Cernek, Tyler Mitchell, Derek Reckmann, Jared Souhrada, and Michael Wittmer for their contributions to the G.C. baseball program.

In the opening game, Principia took an early 4-0 lead after two innings. Greenville was shut out until the fifth inning when they scored five, highlighted by a two run double from Tim Osborne.

Principia tied it up the next inning, but Greenville came back with another two runs, regaining the lead on a Dylan Bone home run. Principia cut G.C.s lead to one in the seventh, but pitcher Nick Bifano was able to close out the game for the Panthers in raising his record to 3-1 with the win.

Bifano threw two innings, allowing one run on four hits. Tyler Mitchell started the game for Greenville on the mound and gave up five runs in five innings.

In the second game, Greenville clubbed Principia by 10 runs in a game shortened by the mercy rule. Osborne and Dathan Berning each had three hits four at bats. Berning also scored three runs and drove in four runs.

Greenville got an early 4-0 lead after two innings with three runs coming on a bases-clearing double by Berning. Principia answered with two runs in the third inning, but Greenville would go on to score in each inning from the fourth to the completion of the game.

Among the highlights was an RBI single from Campbell Albert, who also stole home for a score.

Derek Reckmann, pitching his final home game for Greenville, earned the pitching win with six innings in which he gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits and three walks. He struck out six as he improved his record to 2-3. Michael Wittmer, another senior, closed the game with two scoreless innings in which he struck out two and allowed one hit and one walk.

Greenville ends the regular season with a third place finish in conference (19-8), and an overall record of 22-18. They play Spalding in the SLIAC tournament in Highland, Ill., at Glik Park on Thursday, May 8, at 2 p.m.
