WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The baseball team opened their spring break trip with a split against Benedictine. The Panthers won the first game 3-2 in a come-from-behind effort and lost the second game 6-5 after recovering from a 5-0 deficit to tie the game.

Behind a complete game effort from hurler C.J. Opp in game one, Dalton McFarland scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh when Mike Hardin got a bunt single and the Benedictine pitcher threw the ball away as he tried to put out Hardin at first base.

The Panthers spotted Benedictine a 2-0 lead in the top of the third but answered in the bottom of the fifth with a pair of runs. Ryan Smith hit a leadoff homer to left center, and Hardin's base hit scored McFarland.

Opp threw seven innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on eight hits. He struck out five and walked one as he evened his season record at 1-1.

Tommie Brown and Hardin ended with two hits, and McFarland scored two of the three runs.

In game two, Ryan Strohm threw a complete game but picked up the loss as Benedictine tallied a run in the bottom of the seventh to take the 6-5 win.

The Panthers fell behind early, allowing a run in the first inning and four in the third.

Their bats came to life in the top of the fourth. Jesse Getz got a one-out single and went to second when Trevor Montgomery was hit by a pitch. A RBI single by Tim Osborne allowed Getz to score, and Travis Ralls RBI double plated Montgomery.

In the top of the fifth, Greenville scored a run on a sacrifice fly by Montgomery after a McFarland double and Max Gabriel single.

Greenville evened the score in the top of the sixth with two runs. Greenville loaded the bases, and Hardin was hit by a pitch to force in a run. One batter later, Getz walked to give the Panthers the tying run. Greenville stranded the bases loaded.

Strohm threw 6 1/3 innings, allowing all six runs, four earned, on nine hits. He struck out four and walked one.

Ralls produced two hits in four at bats.

The Panthers (1-3) continue their season with a doubleheader against St. Norbert on Monday at 8:15 a.m. CT (9:15 a.m. ET) at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
