Published: April 13, 2021

GREENVILLE, Ill. Greenville Baseball (8-16, 7-3 SLIAC) kicked off the first of a five-game home stand on Tuesday with an afternoon double-dip against Fontbonne University. Greenville stumbled in the opener with a 7-6 loss, but got back on track with a 10-2 decision in the capper. With the win GC Baseball has now won four of their last five games.

In the openers loss Scotty Voyles was the lead contributor offensively, batting 3-for-5 with an RBI. Senior Kyle Hobar also turned in an impressive effort, hitting 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

In game one a questionable no-call on the base paths allowed for a seventh inning rally by Fontbonne and helped level the score at 5-5 looking into the ninth. In the top of the ninth the Griffins were able to post two runs on two hits, dealing GC a two score deficit heading into the bottom of the final inning. Greenville got a SAC fly from Scotty Voyles to score Daniel Covert and pull GC within one run. With runners on first and second with one out, freshman Reid Cerruti grounded into a game ending double play that handed the Panthers the 7-6 heartbreaker.

Freshman pitcher Michael Wittmer (1-4) was charged the loss, giving up two runs in two innings on three hits.

In the capper Greenville started hot, posting a score of 6-1 through three. GC would add four more insurance runs in the fifth to cruise to the 10-2 victory.

On the mound, David Massengill was dealing as he notched a complete game performance. Massengill pitched seven innings with one earned on five hits with eight strikeouts.

Offensively the Panther club had one of its most balanced outings of the season, as the team racked up ten runs on twelve hits in 28 at-bats with six batters picking up at least one RBI. First Baseman Wes Letizia had a standout performance in the win with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate and two RBI.

Greenville Baseball will return to action Friday, April 15, as they play host in the first of a three game set against Westminster College. The game is scheduled for a 3:00 pm afternoon start and will be broadcast on WGRN 89.5 FM.
