Baseball Wins One of Two on Day One of Florida Trip

Published: April 13, 2021

BABSON PARK, Fla. -- The baseball team opened their seven game Florida trip with a doubleheader split against Curry at Webber International University. The Panthers lost the first game 11-4 and bounced back to win the second game 4-2.

After Curry took a five run lead in the first inning of game one, the Panthers cut the deficit to four when Ryan Smith homered to left-center field in the second inning.

Curry quickly answered Greenville's run with a home run of their own, pushing the GC deficit back to five before the Panthers rallied to post three runs in the bottom of the third. In the Panthers' three-run third, Jared Massengill hit a two-run single, and Kenny Trager had a run-scoring double.

Jared Massengill and Trager were Greenville's most productive offensive players as Massengill went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI. Trager was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Smith's home run was his second of season.

Cody Hinterscher picked up the pitching loss for the Panthers as he surrendered 10 runs on 11 hits in three and one-third innings. He had three strikeouts.

Relief pitchers Michael Wittmer, Tyler Corder, and Jared Massengill combined to limit the Colonels to one run on four hits over the last three and two-thirds innings.

The Panthers rode the right arm of David Massengill in game two of the doubleheader as he threw a seven inning complete game in Greenville's 4-2 win. Massengill held Curry to two runs on five hits. He struck out nine and walked three in his first pitching appearance of the season.

The visiting Panthers opened the game with a run in the first inning on Jared Massengill's two-out single, scoring Cole Lawson. The Colonels matched Greenville's run with one of their own in the bottom of the second.

Dylan Goldsmith doubled in the third inning, advancing to third on a throwing error by the left fielder, and scored when Tyler Pilcher grounded into a double play.

The score remained a 2-1 game until the final inning. The Panthers capitalized on an error by CUrry's shortstop which allowed Adam Wallace to reach first base safely after Jared Souhrada's double. Souhrada later scored on a wild pitch, and Wallace came around to score on Lawson's RBI single.

Goldsmith went 2-for-2 with a run scored, and Lawson was 1-for-2 with a run scored, two stolen bases, and a RBI.

Greenville's record improved to 1-6, and they will continue their trip Tuesday with a single game against St. Norbert at 11:30 a.m. CT.
