Calling: When God Opened My Eyes

How can one experience fail to inspire while another, not so different from the first, makes the heart sing? Michelle Biernbaum '17 shares from her experience about the mystery of God's call and a time her eyes were opened.

I have always been fascinated with the Spanish language. Even though I did not personally know anyone who spoke it, I enjoyed listening and learning about Hispanic cultures. I studied a bit of Spanish in high school and I loved it, but I did not begin to dive into my studies in an advanced manner until coming to Greenville College.

The professors encouraged me and challenged me to immerse myself. I wanted to study abroad, however, I did not feel called to any of the programs that were currently offered. By working with Faith Marie Nava, I became part of the inaugural group to travel to Madrid, Spain with the brand new organization, Experience Spain Study Abroad (ESSA).

I had an amazing trip during which I learned about cross-cultural ministry and discovered the power of worshiping in a culture that is not your own. It opened my eyes to the global reach of the Gospel.

I've come to learn that calling is not limited to what is available. The Lord does not ask His people to stay where things are organized, comfortable, or sensible. Radically answering a life calling can require difficult steps, but it is always so rewarding. God will lead a Christian to become involved in things previously thought impossible.

Though I encountered several obstacles to this ministry in Spain, I am so glad that I listened to the Lord throughout the periods of uncertainty and stress. Following a calling builds a certain kind of trust that is difficult to develop, but fortifies one's reassurance in the Father's power.
