Football controls second half in win over Eureka

EUREKA, Ill. -- The football team picked up a 35-14 win at Eureka on Saturday to improve their conference record to 2-2 and 2-3 overall. Greenville punished Eureka with its ground game, gaining over 300 yards rushing in the contest.

The Panthers had little trouble moving the ball in the game as their 70 snaps resulted in 468 yards of total offense.

Hamid Camara ran the ball 21 times for 156 yards on the afternoon. He scored two touchdowns.

Quarterback Jacob Battaglia was 4-of-9 passing for 99 yards. Battaglia ran the ball six times for a net of 41 yards, including one touchdown.

Greenville staked Eureka to the early lead as the teams traded touchdowns in the first half.

Eureka took its opening possession in for touchdown, and Jacob Tibbetts capped off the Panthers six play, 68 yard opening drive with a 20 yard touchdown run. The Panther extra point effort failed.

Eureka regained the lead early in the second quarter, but Camara scored his first touchdown of the game with about one minute remaining in the half to cut the halftime deficit to 14-13.

The second half belonged to Greenville as the Panthers outscored Eureka 22-0.

Chase Stamatis ran the ball for a six yard touchdown with 5:03 remaining in the third quarter, and Battaglia broke loose for a 38 yard touchdown run with 1:57 left in the third period.

Camara got his second touchdown of the afternoon with a 1 yard plunge with 3:32 left in the game. He converted a run for two points after the touchdown.

Greenville's defense was led by Nicholas Morrow, Jonathan Uperesa, and Robert Deering with eight tackles each. Morrow recovered a fumble.

John Stanley picked up two interceptions, and Alex Baldomino also added an interception.

The Panthers (2-3, 2-2 UMAC) travel to Crown on Saturday, Oct. 10, to break a fifth place tie in the UMAC standings.
