Foundation for the Sciences Will Support GC STEM Programs

Published: April 13, 2021

A generous gift to the College will help support students interested in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs.

The Foundation for the Sciences was founded in 2015 when GC received a lead gift of $250,000 to create an endowment supporting STEM education at GC. The Foundation for the Sciences Endowment Fund now provides for a variety of needs within the sciences at the College, directed by an advisory committee of alumni.

Keeping Up With Science

As technology advances at a fast clip, it becomes more vital than ever to find dollars for research and instrumentation in undergrad science programs. The Foundation for the Sciences Endowment Fund supports

  • equipment purchases and repairs,
  • lab, field and research experiences for students,
  • upgrades to classroom and lab facilities to meet increased enrollment,
  • faculty chair sponsorships, and
  • faculty resources that facilitate stellar STEM instruction.

GC STEM Delivers Big

Greenville Colleges STEM programs already have a track record of excellent educational experiences delivered to students. Majors such as chemistry, physics, math and engineering continue to grow, with biology routinely topping all other majors for enrollment. Signs of healthy progress in the STEM programs at GC include:

Pre-med success: Of GCs pre-med graduates, 90 percent gain acceptance into medical school upon first application.

Graduates pursue doctorates: Recent graduates such as Kirk Pearce 15, Elle Shaw 16, Xiaotong Toni Zheng 16 and Shuto Osawa 16 have been accepted into prestigious doctoral programs in their respective fields with waived tuition and generous stipends, thanks to their outstanding undergraduate work at Greenville College.

State-of-the-art laboratories: GCs quantum information, nanotech and human dissection labs give students access to advanced instrumentation.

Nursing partnerships: A nursing partnerships program with several schools in Illinois and St. Louis allows students to enjoy the benefits of a liberal arts education at Greenville College and then jump on the fast track to a nursing degree from a partner school.

Undergraduate research and publication: Each summer, students gain a competitive edge through hands-on experience as paid full-time researchers at leading companies and universities worldwide. They also co-author articles, some published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Greenville College continues to seek funding to grow the Foundation for the Sciences Endowment Fund, which now sits at $300,000.
