GC Softball Well Prepared for 2013

Published: April 13, 2021

GREENVLLE, Ill.-- The GC Women's Softball team had been training non-stop in the in the off-season and the young team is ready to take to the field for their 2013 season.

In 2012, the team went 14-25 overall and 8-8 in the SLIAC. The Lady Panthers clinched the fourth seed spot in the SLIAC aftertaking the tie-breakeroverWestminster College. The team traveled to Fontbonne and took on the Griffins, losing 5-0 and going on to be eliminated by Blackburn with a 7-2 loss. The SLIAC competition looks to be just as fierce this season, proving that every game will count for the Panthers.

Coach Tenequa Martin will be at the reigns once again, as 2013 will be her third year as head coach of the women.

The team will definately miss the four leading ladies who graduated last year; Rachel Brewer, Brya Irvin, Lindsey Schuberth and Angela Sheets. All four players were key leaders and their shoes will be difficult to fill.

Luckily for GC, there are five freshman who are willing to step up and fill them. In addition, returners Mattie Fairchild and Jessica Laubecher are expected to be huge for Greenville. Coach Martin expects big these from these two athletes this season.

"Mattie led the charge for us at the plate last year and she is looking stronger this year, " Coach Martin explains."Jessica is coming off of a phenomenal freshman year and I think you are going to see a more experienced and relaxed Jessica Laubecher this season. We expect her to lead us in the circle and be a key offensive weapon as well."

In addition to Fairchild and Laubecher, Coach Martin expects the entire team to "step up and stand out."

"You never know quite how things will go when you have more new comers than returners but we have had the opportunity to sit back and watch things come together," Coach Martin added."They're relaxed, they're comfortable with one another, they care about one another, and their skills set complement one another. You put all those things together and I think we are in for a great season."

The team will travel to Stephens College on Saturday, March 2 to play their season-opener. The have games at noon and 2:00pm for their first double-header of 2013.
