Laubecher’s Perfect Game Helps Lift GC Softball Past Eureka

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- GC softball continued their mid-season tear with an afternoon sweep over Eureka College led by freshman Jessica Laubecher's first career perfect game on Wednesday. The Lady Panthers won game one 6-0 inLaubecher's perfect game and closed the evening with a 2-1 win in the second game.

In game one, the game was scoreless with just three hits by Greenvilleheading into the fifth inning. Greenville exploded for a five-run fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run home run by Angie Doherty, Laubecher's run scoring single, an RBI single by Lindsey Schuberth, and a passed ball that allowed Sara Gerig to score.

Greenville tacked on their sixth run in the bottom of the sixth when Brya Irvin hit a ball to third base that led to an error and allowed Doherty to score.

Labecher's pitching line included four strikeouts among the 21 batters she faced. In seven innings, her top-notch defense supported her with 17 putouts including two lineouts, six popouts, four flyouts, and five ground outs.

Game two was a low scoring affair as the Lady Panthers pushed acrossa run in the bottom of the seventh to win the game 2-1. Laubecher pitched again, throwing seven innings with three strikeouts. Eureka touched Laubecher for one run on six hits and two walks.

After spotting Eureka their first run of the day in the third inning of the second game, Greenville knotted the score at 1-1 when Mattie Fairchild picked up an RBI single.

Fairchild was at the center of Greenville's offense in the seventh inning as she came through with a game-winning single that scored Doherty who had singled in the inning.

With the two wins, Greenville's record improved to 11-13 (5-1 SLIAC). They are in second place in the SLIAC with their 5-1 record. They return to action Friday at Webster.
