CARLINVILLE, Ill. Greenville ace David Massengill dealt a four-hit, eight K shutout Friday afternoon to propel the Panthers to a 3-0 win over conference rival Blackburn College in the first match of a three-game set.
Massengill dished out a season high eight strikeouts while walking only one batter in the 31 he faced. The senior was relieved in the ninth by junior hurler Scotty Voyles who retired all three of his opponents to earn the save.
Massengill also contributed offensively, batting 1-for-4 with an RBI to help his cause on the mound. Freshman first baseman Ryan Smith also turned in an impressive 2-for-4 performance at the plate with two RBI coming on his team and SLIAC leading fourth homerun.
GC baseball now returns home to Robert E. Smith Field and will host Blackburn in Saturdays double header and conclude the three-game SLIAC set.
