Men’s Soccer Loses Close Battle to Nationally Ranked Dominican University

Published: April 13, 2021

RIVER FOREST, Ill.-- The Panthers held their own against Dominican University, but fell 1-0 to the #10 ranked Stars.

The first half went by without either team finding the back of the net. The teams headed into halftime determined to get on the board. In the 50th minute, Dominicans Gabriel Gongora capitalized on an opportunity to bring the Stars up 1-0. That goal would prove to be the game-winner and the Stars walked away with the win.

We went toe to toe with a top 10 team, said Greenville Head Coach Chris Swift. We were very organized defensively, but we had one lapse and they took advantage. That's why they're a top team. We battled back and had a couple of really good chances of our own, but that's soccer.

GC had 12 shots in the match and senior goalkeeper, Thomas Crown, recorded 5 saves.

Overall, the close result proves Greenville can truly compete with some of the best teams in NCAA Division III.

We now know we can compete with the top teams, but our ultimate goal is to do more than compete, we want to win, and to do that is going to require hard work each and every day.

The teams record is now 1-1. GC will play again on Thursday, September 5 at their home field against Trinity Christian.
