Published: April 13, 2021

Dr. Donald G. York will present at Greenville College on Wednesday, November 5, hosted by the Miller Lecture Series and Greenville Religion and Science Society. York serves as the Horace B. Horton Professor of Astronomy, emeritus, at the University of Chicago. He will present a colloquium at 4:30 p.m. in Snyder 104. His presentation is titled It Is Not The Heat, It Is the Humility: The Limits of Knowledge."

Born in Shelbyville, Ill., York received his B.S. degree from MIT in 1966 and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1971. After 12 years as a research scientist on the Princeton Orbiting Astronomical Observatory Copernicus, he moved to a professorship at the University of Chicago. He became the founding director of the Apache Point Observatory outside of Sunspot, NM, leading the development of the 3.5 meter telescope and the Sloan Foundation 2.5 meter Telescope, used to map the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. He spent nearly 50 years researching topics relevant to major questions in astronomy including: gas and dust between galaxies, the abundance of elements in the periodic table at different times in the Universe, the formation of galaxies and stars, and the detailed conditions in interstellar clouds. York also led two major programs for the John Templeton Foundation.

This event is free and open to the public with local clergy and laity especially encouraged to attend. For more information on Yorks presentation, please contact Dr. Darrell Iler by email (darrell.iler@greenville.edu) or by calling 618.664.6523.
