Partners in Life and Practice: John and Tricia Foster

Published: April 13, 2021

John '93 and Tricia (McVay '94) Foster are part of a profile series on GC couples who met as undergrads, married, and then took on daunting but rewarding work as health care providerstogether.

How Did They Meet?

Tricias brother, Tim, attended GC, and she visited him the weekend of a gathering at a students home. Tim asked if she wanted to go on a blind double-date to the party with his roommate John. And so I accompanied her for the evening, John remembers. And a couple of weeks later, it dawned on her brother that she and I were actually dating! Tricia soon transferred to GC.

Career Trajectory

After GC, both worked as lab assistants at Washington University in St. Louis. Then came medical school in Kansas CIty followed by relocation to northern Indiana for residency. Finally settling in Elkhart County, John worked for a hospital while Tricia worked a few days a week for an occupational health clinic. They both quickly tired of how little they controlled their own schedules, and decided to open a clinic. This ushered John into a whole new world of work possibilities. A local sheriff asked him to make health care visits to the jail, and this snowballed into Johns full-time role treating inmates through the company Correct Care Solutions. Tricia, meanwhile, transitioned their clinic into an occupational medicine facility. She is currently setting up an occupational medicine department for a local hospital.

Challenges and Rewards

Hands down, the most challenging thing has always been family time, John says. It was the pairs greatest struggle until they opened the clinic and became their own bosses. Now, he says, its much easier to make time and prioritize their childrens activities. Its a sweet reward after years of hard work and stress.

Still Abides the Memory Ever

John and Tricia use social media and cell phones to stay in touch with GC classmates. They have great memories of friends and academic pursuits. John encourages todays students to take even fuller advantage of the GC experience than he did. I probably did not take advantage of what GC had to offer as much as I could have. If he could do it over, he says, hed get more involved in the Colleges ministry opportunities.
