Ruder’s Two Goals Lift Men’s Soccer Past Harris Stowe 3-2

Published: April 13, 2021

GREENVILLE, Ill. Junior Daniel Ruder opened and closed the match with a pair of goals to help give GC the 3-2 edge over Harris Stowe University on Wednesday and avoid the early season upset.

The midfielder netted his first attempt in the closing seconds of first half play to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead heading into intermission. Ruders second goal would serve as the game winner as he buried his shot on an assist from senior Steve Beam to give GC the 3-2 lead in the 89th minute.

We are happy to get the win, stated junior captain Matt Cowman. However, we played really sloppy and know that we should have performed on a much higher level as a team. We are still sloppy and need to clean things up on the field.

Though GC outshot HSU 15-6, the Panthers committed 12 offside penalties and missed several chances at an offensive attack.

In the first half Greenville jumped out to the early lead behind Ruders goal on a pass from senior Josh Cranston. HSU would tie the game in the opening moments of the second frame before Greenvilles Mark Ward netted a go-ahead unassisted goal in the 80th minute. Harris Stowe quickly answered in the 81st minute on a penalty kick to equalize the margin. With time winding down in regulation Ruder connected with a well-placed ball by senior Steve Beam to eke the Panthers past Harris Stowe 3-2 in the 89th minute.

With the win Greenville mens soccer moves to 1-2-1 in 2011.

Mens Soccer will return to action tomorrow, September 8, as they play host LeTourneau University at 4:00 pm.
