Sievert's Overtime Goal Lifts Women’s Soccer Past Fontbonne On Senior Day

Published: April 13, 2021

GREENVILLE, Ill. Greenville womens soccer fended off a late surge by SLIAC foe Fontbonne on Saturday and eked past the Griffins 3-2 in dramatic fashion on Senior Day.

Senior midfielder Jackie Sievert headlined the ladies efforts in the match, netting the clutch overtime clincher while posting an assist and six shots. Senior GK Emily Rose notched the win in net for the Panthers, recording the shutout and seven saves.

The Black & Orange kicked off senior day by displaying full control of the game in first half action. Sophomore striker Natalie Henneberry scored a goal off of a corner kick by Sievert to bring the score to 1-0 with 20 minutes left in the half. About seven minutes later, fellow sophomore Maureen Murphy used a foul in the box to extend the lead with a well-placed penalty kick into the back of the net.

The strong first half performance delivered the home Panther squad a 2-0 lead heading into intermission, but a second period run by the Griffins equalized the margin in regulation. Each team had chances before the end of the half to clinch the match, but extra play was needed to decide the conference battle.

Five minutes into the overtime session, senior Sievert fittingly ended the match with an unassisted game winner to serve Greenville the pivotal conference win 3-2.

We are very proud of the women for the way they battled today, but our heart is really with the seniors, commented head coach Brian McMahon. "These seniors have compiled a 57-22-2 record during their four-year career, but more importantly I am proud of who these ladies have become off the field.

With the win Greenville womens soccer advances to 13-5 (6-1 SLIAC) and will close the 2011 regular season as they travel to Elsah, Ill. to play Principia on Tuesday, October 25 at 5:00 pm.
