Softball advances to winner's bracket with win over Fontbonne

ELSAH, Ill. -- The softball team defeated Fontbonne 8-3 in the their opening game of the SLIAC tournament. Cayla Speaks had three RBI as she homered in the seventh inning.

Brianna Anderson picked up the win for the Panthers. Anderson allowed three earned runs, five hits and two walks while striking out four over seven innings of work.

The Panthers never trailed after scoring three runs in the second on an RBI single by Anaya Tobiason.

Two runs in the bottom of the third helped Fontbonne University Griffins close its deficit to 3-2.

The Lady Panthers scored one run in the fourth inning, and then followed it up with one more in the fifth. In the fourth, the Panthers scored on a passed ball, plating Shelby Cash.

After pushing across one run in the bottom of the sixth, Fontbonne faced a 5-3 deficit.

The Lady Panthers (20-19-1) face Westminster on Friday in the winner's bracket. The loser will face the winner of the Fontbonne-Eureka contest in a second game on Friday, and the winner of the game will advance to the SLIAC tournament championship.
