Softball cruises past Spalding

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Spalding University didn't have a chance on Saturday, as the softball team won in blowout fashion, 13-7 in seven innings at Louisville.

The Panthers scored six runs in the third on a solo home run by Shannon Elbe, an RBI single by Mattie Fairchild, a two-run home run by Tiffany Samsoe, an RBI double by Jessie Finke, and an RBI double by Becca Oldham.

Fairchild racked up two RBIs on three hits for the Panthers.

The Panthers pounded Spalding University pitching, as seven hitters combined for 14 hits, 10 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

A three-run fifth inning helped bring Spalding University within four. An RBI double by Hannah Stucker, an RBI single by Alyssa McAfee, and an RBI single by Paige French set off Spalding University rally. But, Hannah Burger got Kelsey McDowell to fly out to end the inning.

The Panthers increased their lead with four runs in the sixth. Oldham started the inning with a single, scoring Mattie and Andrea Martin. That was followed up by Jessica Laubecher's single, bringing home Jessie.

The Panthers tacked on another two runs in the seventh. Fairchild kicked things off with a single, scoring Bryn McKie. That was followed up by Samsoe's single, plating Fairchild.

With the win, Greenville's record stands at 8-5 (1-0 SLIAC).
