Softball earns berth in SLIAC championship game

ELSAH, Ill. -- The softball team eliminated No. 1 seed and SLIAC regular season champion Fontbonne with a 6-3 victory on Friday night to advance to the SLIAC championship game for the third straight season.

Game 1 Recap

Greenville was handed its first set-back in the tournament as they lost 6-3 to Westminster in the winner's bracket on Saturday.

Tiffany Samsoe did all she could to give the Panthers a boost, but it wasn't enough to get past Westminster.

Samsoe racked up two RBIs on three hits for the Panthers. She homered in the third inning and singled in the first and fifth innings.

Catie Opp took the loss for the Panthers. She lasted just 2 2/3 innings, walked two, struck out one, and allowed three runs.

The Westminster College Blue Jays jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

After posting one run in the third, Westminster scored one in the sixth.

Westminster took the lead in the fifth, scoring two runs on a solo home run and RBI single.

Shelby Cash and Bryn McKie recorded two hits for Greenville

Game 2 Recap

Greenville faced Fontbonne in an elimination game on Friday, and Greenville came out on top in a 6-3 game. Andrea Martin brought home the go-ahead run to give the Panthers the lead in the sixth inning.

After Bryn McKie walked, Martin came to the plate with the score tied at three in the sixth inning, and singled, plating McKie.

McKie reached base three times in the game for the Panthers. She scored two runs and had one RBI. She singled in the first and seventh innings.

Brianna Anderson got the win for the Lady Panthers. She allowed three runs over seven innings. Anderson struck out one, walked one and gave up six hits.

In the top of the first, the Lady Panthers grabbed the early lead, 2-0. Greenville got things going when McKie singled. A single by Anaya Tobiason then moved McKie from first to second. Tiffany Samsoe singled, scoring McKie. The Panthers added another run when Tobiason scored on a groundout by Martin.

Fontbonne responded with three runs in the second on a three-run double.

The Panthers built upon their lead with two runs in the seventh. A fielder's choice scored Emi Hug for the inning's first run. That was followed up by McKie's single, plating Karissa Woody.

The Lady Panthers (21-20-1) will play Westminster at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Lady Panthers must win to set up a winner-take-all second game on Saturday night.
