Softball Falls to Fontbonne, Blackburn; Eliminated in SLIAC Tournament

Published: April 13, 2021

FERGUSON, Mo. Softball saw their season come to a close on Thursday as they were defeated by both Fontbonne University and Blackburn College in the first round of the double-elimination SLIAC Tournament at Fergusons Forestwood Park. Greenville lost the opener 6-1, and dropped the second game in a 9-8, eleven-inning heartbreaker.

GC notched only two hits in the opener as Fontbonne cruised to the 6-1 victory.

Angela Sheets toed the rubber for the Black & Orange in game one and was dealt the loss in her four and two-thirds innings of work. Sheets got little run support from the Lady Panther bats in the first game, and surrendered six earned.

Freshman third baseman Sarah Gerig headlined the ladies efforts at the plate in game one against Fontbonne. Gerig batted 1-for-3 with an RBI in the loss.

Despite the opening loss, the ladies had little time to rest as SLIAC rival Blackburn College awaited in the second half of the days scheduled double-dip.

GC and Blackburn battled it out for eleven innings, but it was the Lady Beavers who claimed the win 9-8.

Pitcher Lindsey Schuberth was charged the loss in the contest, dispite GC putting up 8 runs in the extra-inning affair.

The Lady Panthers finished the 2011 season with an overall record of 14-23 (8-8 SLIAC).
