Softball splits against Spalding to finish fourth in SLIAC

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The softball team clinched a SLIAC tournament position with a split of two games at Spalding. The Lady Panthers won 5-3 in game one and then gave up a seventh inning lead in a 4-3 game two loss.

Game 1 Recap

Andrea Martin brought home the go-ahead run to give the Panthers the lead in the seventh inning, as the Panthers hung on to beat Spalding 5-3 on Monday. Greenville recovered from a 3-1 final inning deficit in the win.

In Greenville's half of the seventh inning, Shelby Cash and Bryn McKie produced one-out singles and were advanced to second and third on Anaya Tobiason's groundout.

Tiffany Samsoe had a two-run single with two outs to tie the game. After Samsoe stole second base, Martin gave Greenville an RBI single. The women tacked on their final run with a single by Cayla Speaks.

Brianna Anderson got it done in the circle on the way to a win. She allowed three runs over seven innings. Anderson struck out one, walked three and gave up eight hits.

Spalding jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

Greenville cut the lead to 3-1 in the fifth on an RBI single by Tobiason.

Game 2 Recap

The Lady Panthers managed 12 hits off Spalding but fell 4-3 in seven innings in game two.

Speaks was charged with the loss. She lasted just 3 1/3 innings, walked two, struck out one, and allowed two runs.

The Panthers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Bryn McKie got things going for the Panthers with a single. A stolen base moved McKie from first to second, and McKie reached third on a groundout by Tobiason. Samsoe's sacrifice fly put Greenville on the scoreboard.

Greenville added another run in the fourth as they scored on an error by the rightfielder.

Spalding tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, but Greenville regained the lead with a run in the top of the fifth. Martin's RBI single gave Greenville a 3-2 lead.

Spalding won the game in the bottom of the seventh with two runs scored with two outs.

The Lady Panthers (19-19-1) will face the number 1 seed in the SLIAC tournament at Principia on Thursday.
