Softball sweeps Westminster, moves to second place

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- The softball team improved to second place in SLIAC play with a pair of wins over Westminster on Monday. Greenville won 6-5 in the first game before capping the day with a 4-0 win in game two.

Game 1 Recap

Greenville scored three runs in the first and fourth innings as they took a 6-0 lead and held on as Westminster rallied to tighten the game to a 6-5 final.

Anaya Tobiason gave Greenville a 2-0 lead with a first inning home run and Caitie Opp followed later in the inning with an RBI single.

Tobiason struck again in the fourth inning with an RBI single and scored on a wild pitch. Andrea Martin provided an RBI double.

Cayla Speaks picked up the pitching win for Greenville as she relieved starter Opp. Speaks threw two innings and allowed two runs on four hits.

Opp pitched the first five innings and permitted three runs, one earned, and struck out three.

Game 2 Recap

Shannon Elbe's sixth inning grand slam broke a scoreless tie as Greenville wrapped up the doubleheader sweep with a 4-0 victory.

Brianna Anderson was dynamite in the circle for Greenville as she only allowed one hit in the complete game shutout.

Laney Thacker, Martin, and Cassandra Lueking scored on Elbe's grand slam. Martin produced two hits in the contest.

The Lady Panthers evened their season record at 15-15-1 (10-2 SLIAC) with a doubleheader at Fontbonne coming up on Wednesday.
