Music Business Major Prepares Students for Life After College
Published: April 13, 2021
The Music Business industry has rapidly changed over the past ten years, which means the jobs students might pursue after college have also changed. As music and music consumption are becoming increasingly digitized, methods for finding, producing and marketing are changing. Greenville College Music Business Professor, Danara Moore observes, Its very important in this business to be ready for anything, which is why we focus so much on experience and entrepreneurship. If a student has that passion in their gut, I can teach them the rest."
In 2011 during her first year teaching at Greenville, Moore worked to carefully craft new courses and program structure to emphasize experience and project based learning. Five years later, she says shes happy with the results. Im really proud of my students. Having the opportunity to work alongside them and build and create with them is the best job in the world!
The spirit of team and working together is one of the Music Business programs trademarks and there is an identifiable culture and community that exists amongst the Music Business majors. According to Moore, community and culture cant develop unless you get everyone in the same room, working together and working it out. Conflict with commitment makes the difference, Moore adds. We are all different people, with different ideas, backgrounds and preferences but we are committed to figuring it out together. Space and grace builds unique friendships and persistent work ethic. At the end of the day, its all about the team around you.
To emphasize that idea further, the course Music & Entertainment Lab was added to the degree requirements.Music Business students enroll in these courses every semester from the time they are freshman to seniors and work together to create, implement and manage projects. From the weekly Blackroom Caf, a singer-songwriter night produced in partnership with the Audio Engineering majors, to full-scale social media marketing and event management, the experience makes all the difference.
With the growing diversity of opportunities in the music industry, transferable skills are the key to success in any situation. Moore explains, At the end of the day, its not the content you know, its the competence you show. Are you resourceful and easy to work with? Do you have a strong work ethic, good attitude and are you patient and kind? Does your yes mean yes and your no mean no.
