Volleyball Anxious to Build on Past Success in 2009

Published: April 13, 2021

GREENVILLE, Ill. - The 2009 Greenville College volleyball season promises to be one filled with excitement, energy, and enthusiasm as head coach Tom Ackerman and the volleyball team continue to build their program. Now in his eighth season as head coach, Ackerman has completed four consecutive seasons and six of seven seasons with a record above .500, joining him with legendary Greenville College volleyball coach Lynn Simpson Adams as the only volleyball coaches to accomplish those feats.

Now with 98 wins in seven seasons, Ackerman ranks second all-time in seasons and wins as Greenville College volleyball coach. After finishing the 2008 season 16-13 and 10-6 in conference play, the team feels they are a top contender in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a very strong returning squad and a freshman class that can contribute immediately.

"I am confident that our returners have the potential to win the SLIAC conference," said Ackerman. "That confidence in our returners combined with an excellent recruiting class should make for a great season."

The 2009 Panthers return all but one senior from last year. Libero Kerry Hammer, a four-year starter, graduated in May, but Greenville will be represented by three members of the SLIAC all-conference team as they compete this season.

The senior class includes middle blocker Marsha Marsland and opposite Christy Dashiell, who will also serve as one of the squad's three captains. Also a captain and senior is Lauren Finders who led the SLIAC last year in assists and was a second team all-conference player and team most valuable player.

The junior class features middle blockers Bethany Billingsley and outside hitters Nikki Snowden and Jenna Marcotte. Also in the junior class is middle hitter Jessica Dothager, a second team all-conference player and captain. Outside hitter Katelin Feyerabend returns as well after earning SLIAC first team honors in 2008 and newcomer of the year in 2007. Joining the class as a transfer is Lauren Mason.

The sophomore class includes outside hitter Kristen Schutte and setter Janell Crow. Alyssa Cliffe and Sydney Cooper also return as defensive specialists.

The freshman class is comprised of outside hitters Ansley DeVrieze, Kelsey Boerngen, and Ashley Hall; middle hitters Cassie Hutson and Tricia Gall; setters Kaitlyn Titus, Hannah Groves, and Shannon Cernek; and defensive specialist Olivia Snyder.

The Panthers open their season at NCAA Division III powerhouse Washington University on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 6 p.m.

"That should be a great test for our squad and set the pace for the high level of volleyball that I expect us to play this year," said Ackerman. "All of our 2009 recruits have had several years of club experience and I am excited to see what they can do at the college level."
