GREENVILLE, Ill. -- The women's soccer team fell to an impressive Washington - St. Louis squad in their 2015 season opener Tuesday night.

Greenville was on their heels with Washington pressing high up the field but held strong for the first 20 minutes.

The Panthers settled down and were able to get behind Washington's defensive a couple times and created the first real chance of the game with Tymber Gabbert hitting the crossbar. The follow up was cleared off the line by Washington.

The game again switched to Washington dominating play, and they were able to find the back of the net on a corner kick in the 37th minute.

Three minutes later, they were able to score on another corner kick that took the score to 2-0 heading into halftime.

I told the girls at halftime that when playing against teams of the caliber of Wash U that you have to take your chances when you get them," said head coach Jeff Wardlaw. "That sequence in front of goal with the crossbar and then the follow up being cleared off the line was a chance that we have to put away."

"We have to do better on defending the set pieces. It was frustrating that we worked so hard to keep them from scoring in the run of play to then give up two goals in four minutes on corner kicks right before the half.

Goalkeeper Hope Brakenhoff was busy in the net and recorded 13 saves while Lizzy Crist of Washington only had to record three saves.

Jim has a very good team year in and year out and this year is no different," said Wardlaw. "They are a very technically sound team with great athletes up and down their entire roster. They will climb the national rank again this year."

"I told the girls tonight that this will be the most difficult game we will play all year. It was a good test for us to see how we would battle for 90 minutes and although the scoreline doesnt show it, I was very pleased with the work rate of the team and that they continued that work rate till the final whistle.

Greenville will travel to Harris-Stowe on Friday for a 1 p.m. contest.
