Women’s Basketball Edged in Conference Opener 83-73

EUREKA, Ill. Greenville dropped Wednesday nights tilt in Eureka as a record setting free throw performance lifted the Red Devils past the Panthers 83-73.

Eureka College sophomore guard Caty Eeten went a perfect 20-for-20 from the free throw line during Wednesdays St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener, breaking both the Eureka and SLIAC record for free throws made in a game and helped pace the Red Devils to a 40-for-46 performance from the charity stripe as a team. Eetens effort of 20 consecutive free throws also matched a single-game DIII record.

Greenville senior guard Emmalee Fladland dropped in a team-high 25 points to lead the Panthers in Eureka.Greenville ultimately committed 30 fouls, and three Panthers fouled out in the final nine minutes of the contest.

GC controlled much of the road contest, but couldnt overcome the tremendous charity stripe effort of Eureka. The Red Devils scored nearly half their points from the foul line, going 40-for-46 to break the previous program record for free throws made of 37 set against Asbury (Ky.) on Dec. 1, 2001.

Greenville tied the game at 67-67 with three minutes to play behind a clutch Laura Hobbie basket, but the Red Devils answered from the line to put the game away 83-73 in the final minutes of regulation.

We fought really hard as a unit, commented coach Roy Mulholland. You have to give Eureka credit for shooting the way they did from the line, but our ladies showed a lot of composure and played well. Sometimes things dont bounce your way.

Greenville College womens basketball, now 2-3 (0-1 SLIAC) will next take to the hardwood on December 3 as they face conference opponent MacMurray in a Saturday showdown at 1:00 pm.
