After an impressive 22-9 (14-2 SLIAC) season last year, the GC women are ready to hit volleyball the court again for their 2012 season. After bringing home three First-Team All-Conference honors and the SLIAC Player of the Year Award, this year looks to be another great one for the Lady Panthers.
Tom Ackerman, who was awarded the coveted SLIAC Volleyball coach of the year award in 2011, is ready to lead his team again this season. Ackerman is excited to see what the season will hold and knows his team has the potential to be successful. "I feel like we still have a lot of work to do," Ackerman explains, "but I have high hopes the team will hit their stride when we need them to."
This season is looking to be a good one, as the Lady Panthers have a great deal of returning members to the squad. Junior 2011 SLIAC Player of the Year, Corinne Coon, is expected to be an all-star again for the team. Coon finished last year second in the SLIAC with kills, as she averaged 3.18 kills per set. Senior, Tricia Gall, and Sophomore, Nicole Schaeffer were also members of the First Team All-Conference and are back again this year looking to lead their team to another successful season. Gall lead the SLIAC in blocks per set with an average of 1.18 and Schaeffer finished her season with an impressive average of 3.01 kills per set. Senior, Ansley DeVrieze, who was a SLIAC Honorable Mention last fall will also be returning for the Lady Panthers. DeVrieze was best in the SLIAC in service aces with an unmatched average of .56 per set.
The women begin their 2012 season Friday, August 31 with a trip to the Viking Classic Tournament in Augustana, Ill. The women's SLIAC conference play begins with a home match against MacMurray on September 11. The ladies look forward to a tough schedule this year, but are expected to impress.
