Record Number of Students in Summer Science Research

Published: April 13, 2021

Record Number of Students in Summer Science ResearchThis summer marks a banner year for science research at Greenville College with 18 students participating as full time researchers. The previous record for the number of student researchers in one summer was nine.

Darrell Iler, director of STEM programs at GC, reports that nine students working alongside five faculty members will conduct research on campus this summer. Nine others will join research teams at companies and universities worldwide.

Summer science research is part of a program called GC-Summer Research Experience (GC-SRE). Planned projects on GCs campus for this summer include one in physics, one in chemistry and two in biology.

Leading Research Groups Welcome GC Students

Iler has observed an emerging trend, where veterans of GC-SRE gain subsequent acceptance into programs elsewhere, some quite prestigious.

This summer, for example, Elle Shaw will intern at the University of Illinois, home to the nations top condensed matter physics group. Shuto Osawa will intern in Vienna, Austria, at the worlds foremost institute in quantum information science.

I am certain that our students are getting into top summer research programs in large part because of their previous summer research experiences here at GC, said Iler.

Other students conducting research off campus this summer include:

  • Sean Douglas Biology research with Penn State University in the Arizona Desert;
  • Brent McCollum Biochemical research at Sigma-Aldrich in St. Louis;
  • Spencer Jaquet Neurobiology research at Brandeis University in Boston;
  • Tim Daniel Engineering internship with Enter-tech Corporation, Greenville, IL;
  • Luiza Placheta Biology research at Purdue University.
  • Mason Tennell Research on river restoration with AuSable Institute for Environmental Studies in Mancelona, MI.
Grad School Acceptance and Financial Benefit

Undergraduate research makes students strong candidates for graduate school programs. Recent graduate Kirk Pearce 15, veteran of two summers of science research, discovered a financial benefit as well.

Kirk set his sights on advanced studies in theoretical chemistry. Prior to his graduation from GC this May, he gained acceptance into seven of the top Ph.D. programs in his chosen field. All seven universities offered Kirk full tuition waivers and yearly stipends in excess of $20,000. Three of the seven universities added $5,000 yearly fellowship grants to their respective packages.
