Teaching English as a Second Language, MA Online Overview

Prepare to teach and interact with a culturally and linguistically diverse population. You have the immediate potential to greatly affect and impact students when you learn how to effectively communicate cross-culturally in diverse contexts.

Greenville University's online ESL program provides online courses to prepare you to teach English to individuals for whom English is not their primary language. If you hold an Illinois teaching license, you will also complete 100 hours of field experience needed to meet Illinois State Board of Education requirements for ESL approval/endorsement. This program is not an initial licensure program.

In the Teaching English as a Second Language master's, you'll:

  • Use the theoretical foundations of teaching English in your classroom.
  • Understand the role of linguistics in the development of language and apply your understanding to your curriculum.
  • Combine your educational studies with cross-cultural studies in order to teach in a diverse setting.
  • Develop assessment strategies to improve the performance of your classroom.

Hands-on Experience. This program provides 100-hours of clinical experience in an ESL classroom environment.  You will demonstrate techniques and strategies in authentic classroom experiences.

Accreditation.  Our School of Education is accredited through the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).
